What Is the Duolingo English Test?
When students want to study abroad either for a high school, a university, a master or any degree that they are looking for they usually have to take an English language proficiency test as part of the admissions requirement.
For people that want to live abroad and are looking for a residency in countries such as the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom they will also need to pass the English proficiency test, depending on the country the score will vary.
So once you know that you need to take the English proficiency test, the options used to be TOEFL and IELTS, both tests are the cornerstone to evaluating your English level. But these days there’s a new kid on the block, the one and only Duolingo, that comes with a smart interface, is simpler, and has two main reasons to be the number one test for applicants, is easier and cheaper!
The Duolingo English Test will evaluate your ability to read, write, speak, and listen in English. Once you start the test depending on the type of answers that you provide the AI built into the test will increase or decrease the difficulty of your following questions. In addition to multiple-choice questions, you answer open-ended questions to assess your spoken and written English skills as well. Once you finish the program will grade all your answers and give you a score.
Duolingo English Test Price 2024
When it comes to price the Duolingo English Test is the most cost-effective. Having in mind that the whole process is online the cost for the exam is cheaper than any other exam. By cutting down on external costs such as the rent of a test center, the teacher, and the logistics that come along with an in-person test, the Duolingo exam fee is only $65.
Maybe only $65 doesn’t sound so cheap, but having in mind that the cost for the other options that you have for an English language proficiency test such as TOEFL or IELTS are 4 or 5 times more, then the price for the Duolingo makes more sense.
Another advantage that you will have by taking the Duolingo Exam is that you can send your scores to up to 40 institutions for no extra cost. The TOEFL test, by comparison, can cost around $200, depending on your testing location, plus $20 per additional score report you’d like to send. IELTS, meanwhile, charges more than $240 for their exam, or even more depending on your location.
Duolingo English Test Price in India 2024
The Duolingo English test fee in India for Indian students would be around ₹5428.31 – subject to change based on current US/India exchange rates.
To pay the Duolingo English test fee in India, candidates need to click on the ‘Purchase the test’ option. They then need to select the ‘Buy Now’ option for paying the fee.
Candidates need to have their passport or Government ID or driving license as mandatory Duolingo requirements.
Once you purchase the test from your account, the Duolingo test fees can be paid by clicking on the “Buy Now” option. You can pay your Duolingo exam fees using any of the major credit cards and PayPal. The website accepts Alipay in China and Diners Club cards can be used for making payments in USD.
Duolingo English Test Reschedule Fees
This is a topic that is not clear on most pages or forums, some pages state that it is possible within the first 21 days after you buy the test, to reschedule. Although this is not technically rescheduling, what happens here is that you haven’t taken the test yet.
To be clear, once you purchase the Duolingo English test you will have 21 days to take it, once the 21 days are passed you lose your chance, and there’s no refund or reschedule after this period.
In conclusion, you will have 21 days from the time that you buy the test to take it once, if you wish to reschedule to a different date outside the 21 day period, or if you want to take a new test, you will have to pay the $65 once again.
Duolingo English Test Cancellation Fees
When it comes to cancellations the same rule as the rescheduling applies, if for any reason you do not take the test within the 21-day period after you buy the test, you will lose the slot and your test will be canceled.
In case you cancel the test or fail to take the test you will also lose your slot. So in the case that for some reason Duolingo suspends or terminates your account and stops the use of the service, or you close your account voluntarily, there will be no refund or exchange, including any new tests.
If you decide to cancel your test you can do the following:
- Visit Duolingo English Test’s official site.
- Log in as a registered user.
- Go to the Test Cancel option.
- Fill in the required details and affirm Cancellation.
- Confirm and log out.
In case you face a problem with the test or the results you can always contact their customer service and if the error is on their end you can get a refund, although if you didn’t follow the test rules you will be ineligible for a refund.
Duolingo English Test Exam Fees: Payment Options
As we already mentioned, the Duolingo English Test fees are $65 and you need to click on the ‘Purchase the test’ option and then you can pay it by clicking on the “Buy Now” button.
To pay for the test you can use either:
- Card Payment (Debit or Credit)
- PayPal (Unique Online Payment platform)
As you can see you can pay for your Duolingo Test using any of the major credit cards and PayPal. There are some exceptions for example in China you can use Alipay, you can also use Diners Club cards to make payments in USD.
Note: The payment has to be completed before taking the test.
Duolingo English Test Registration Process
The process to take the Duolingo English Test is simple and can be completed online from any location in the world. There are no specific test dates set for the Duolingo English Test, so you can just register and begin your test.
To take the test you will need a computer with a reliable internet connection and a front-facing camera. You will be monitored by expert human proctors, with the help of AI, who will examine each test session to ensure you follow the rules. For this reason, you need to be in a well-lit room with the computer’s video camera, microphone, and speakers turned on.
For those taking the test using a Mac, you will need to permit to record your computer screen, along with keystroke access before starting the test.
The Duolingo English Test will take you around 1 hour to complete. It’s broken down into 3 different segments:
- Introduction and setup (five minutes)
- Adaptive test (45 minutes)
- Video interview (10 minutes)
Your results will be published within 48 hours after you take the test, and these results will remain valid for 2 years.
Have in mind that Duolingo has strict testing rules that you need to follow. Some of the rules include:
- Keep your ears and face uncovered and visible to the proctor at all times.
- Keep your notes, mobile devices, and textbooks away from the testing area.
- Be sure to be looking at the device screen at all times during your test.
- Stay in the test window at all times.
- Avoid using predictive text input tools and web camera software.
